Description

Potassium is a key element in the body forming a large percentage of the ionic component of the environment inside cells [intracellular] as opposed to the extracellular environment [in plasma and outside of and between cells. The body has a daily obligate loss of potassium through the kidneys since the kidneys are not perfectly efficient at reabsorbing potassium from the renal tubules in the process of filtering the blood. Low potassium values can come from endocrine diseases such as Addison’s disease and hypoaldosteronism. Low potassium can also occur in patients who lose extra potassium through the kidneys through the use of medications such as diuretics. [Reference 7] Standard Western diets are higher in sodium than potassium. This increased ratio of sodium to potassium results in an increased risk of high blood pressure, hypertension and stroke.
