Saw palmetto has biological properties of being a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. The enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into DHT [dihydrotestosterone]. Since dihydrotestosterone can cause prostate enlargement and baldness blocking this enzyme can decrease both of these problems.
